David Marcus, co-creator of Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency project, will head up the new group, called F2, which is short for Facebook Financial, Bloomberg first reported.

Stephane Kasriel, a former CEO of freelancing platform UpWork, and former PayPal executive, will serve as payments vice president.

The social media company launched Facebook Pay in November with the goal of allowing users to make payments across its suite of applications with initial roll out on Facebook and Messenger. It recently started rolling out Facebook Pay in WhatsApp in Brazil. And it plans to roll out Facebook Pay on Instagram in the coming weeks in the United States.

Facebook also introduced a digital wallet for the Libra network of cryptocurrency to help people send money across the world under the name Calibra in June of last year.

In May of this year, the digital wallet was renamed and re-branded as Novi, after criticism with policymakers concerned about virtual currency disrupting the global financial system and risk of money laundering and competing with the U.S. dollar.

Marcus testified before skeptical lawmakers at a Senate banking committee last summer, members of which were concerned about misuse and money laundering.

He said Libra is backed on a one-to-one basis through cash bank deposits, short term government securities and hard currencies, and the entire system would be fully vetted before launch.

The Evangelical Association of Malawi says religious leaders have not been fully consulted in the new Covid19 regulations that have been announced by government.

In an interview, Reverend Zacc Kawalala, chairperson for Ethics Peace and Justice Commission of the association has told MIJ Online that failure to consult by government on Covid-19 regulations would be less effective.

According to Kawalala, they view the development as a violation of their rights as they were only called into such a discussion during the DPP regime.

Among other things, Attorney General Chikosa Silungwe said that any social gathering beyond ten people including religious gatherings has become illegal.

Silungwe has since emphasized on the need for compliance of the Covid-19 regulations.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development-CDEDI has dragged government to court over the newly gazzeted laws.

According to CDEDI Executive Director Silyvester Namiwa, the newly gazetted laws have huge potential of suffocating citizen’s enjoyment of their human rights.

The developments come as so far, there have been 4,658 recovered cases of Covid19 in Malawi.

Ronaldinho set to end five-month ‘prison hell’ and return to Brazil after fake passport scandal in Paraguay

Brazilian legend, Ronaldinho is expected to be allowed to return to Brazil, bringing his five-month prison hell to an end over fake passport scandal in Paraguay.

Back in March, the former AC Milan and Barcelona legend was caught up in a scandal after entering Paraguay with fake documents along with his brother.

According to La Nacion, passports were found bearing the names of Ronaldinho and Roberto and with Paraguayan nationality despite having their Brazilian passports confiscated in 2018 following conviction in an environment offence.

The pair later ended up in a Paraguay prison before they were released on house arrest after serving just 32 days behind bars.

In a new report by The Sun, Ronaldinho has been offered freedom and an escape from trial in exchange for a £70,000 cash payment following his fake passport scandal arrest.

His brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira is also expected to be allowed to leave with him if a judge accepts a new prosecution proposal based around a two-year suspended jail sentence and a £85,000 fine.

Both men would have to plead guilty to a charge of entering the country with falsified passports as part of a so-called deal called a ‘salida process’ in Paraguay, according to reports in the South American country.

In April, the 40-year-old told Paraguayan daily ABC Color that the first thing he will do when he recovers his freedom is give his doting mum Miguelina “a big kiss”.

Ministry of Homeland Security has said the national registration exercise for National Identity cards will soon be gazetted as part of essential services during current Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing the media in Lilongwe, Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda said Covid-19 has disrupted the national registration exercise because the exercise is yet to be gazetted.

Africa number of coronavirus cases exceed 1 million

There is panic across the continent as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Africa has exceeded 1 million with experts saying the number may be way higher.

Global health experts have said that the true number of Africa’s coronavirus cases may be several times higher, considering the continent’s poor testing and counting facilities.

More than 22,000 people have so far died of COVID-19 in Africa, with South Africa accounting for the highest number – 10,210 deaths as on Sunday 9, 2020.

Five African countries account for 75% of all confirmed cases of coronavirus in Africa: South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria.

Often regarded as Africa’s most developed country, South Africa is currently struggling to cope with the pandemic as confirmed cases pass half-million, ranking fifth in the world.

According to the Director of Africa CDC, Dr John Nkengasong, Nigeria could have had close to 1 million cases by now if it hadn’t acted quickly.

With an estimated population of over 200 million people, according to recent UN data, Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country. But it has somehow done better than South Africa in containing the pandemic. Or could it be a case of undercounting?

South Africa has the most extensive coronavirus testing and data collection facilities in Africa. The country is already running out hospital bed space, reports say.

Earlier this month, Lagos State, the Nigerian city with most cases of the virus, shut down one of its isolation centres.

“We have got to a stage where we need to balance the economics of this and which of these facilities do we need to keep running. Some of them now are having less than 20 per cent of occupancy,” the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said.

Among those waiting, was a man who also happens to be a pastor, he was waiting for his daughter who had just tested negative to the virus.

After being discharged, instead of moving with her dad, the young lady opted to leave with a soldier, who was waiting on a motorcycle.

The soldier was also a COVID-19 patient, and her dad approached him to understand what was going on.

According to TheCable, the lady was ultimately taken away on the motorcycle while her father left the centre in annoyance.

The father told the media outlet that his daughter began exhibiting a wayward attitude after graduating from school.

“She is my second child but after her graduation from the school of statistics, she refused to come home. I only got to know that she had been isolated at the centre through a relative she confided in. I am a man of God and I will continue to pray for her,” he said.

249 professional footballers under investigation over tax avoidance

A huge 246 professional footballers are under investigation by tax chiefs.

A STAGGERING 246 professional footballers are under investigation by tax chiefs.

And the number of players being probed by HMRC over potential tax avoidance breaches has almost TREBLED in the past year.

Freedom of information requests by accountants UHY Hacker Young have revealed that cases under investigation by tax officers during 2019-20 has risen by 159, from 87 the previous season.

The cases may relate to image-rights deals, where players are paid extra money on top of their salaries for the use of their image by the club in advertising and endorsements.

Commonly this income is paid to a company set up by the player and it is only taxed at the 19 per cent corporation tax rate rather than the 45 per cent income tax rate paid by high earners.

And in some cases image rights companies are based offshore, which can reduce the money owed even further.

Elliott Buss, partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: “HMRC believes that lots of lesser-known footballers are effectively avoiding tax by getting paid huge sums for image rights that HMRC views as overpriced.

“If you’re a second-choice left-back in the Championship getting paid a great deal in image-rights payments, then this is likely to trigger an investigation by the taxman.

“You may have to make a robust argument to HMRC to show how the value of the image rights has been arrived at.”

Figures released by the tax office to the national accountancy group confirm 55 agents are also being investigated — up from 23 in 2018-19.

The tax authority suspects there are cases where agents’ fees from transfers — which are paid by players and run into millions of pounds — are not declared correctly for tax purposes.

There are also 25 open investigations into football clubs for the tax year 2019-20.

HMRC’s overall additional tax collected from investigations into professional football in 2019-20 totalled £73.1million — with £60.1m of that coming from clubs.

Explosives expert claims Beirut explosion was caused by burning military missiles - not ammonium nitrate

At least 160 died when 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse went up in flames

An explosives expert has claimed the Beirut blast was caused by burning military missiles - not ammonium nitrate.

Danilo Coppe, 56 and from Parmesan in Italy, is one of the country's leading explosive experts.

He believes the August 4 blast, which killed 160 people, wounded 6,000 and destroyed 300,000 homes, was not caused by ammonium nitrate because the colour of the cloud was orange.

The expert, nicknamed Mr. Dynamite, explained that when ammonium nitrate detonates, it generates an unmistakable yellow cloud.
