Non-governmental organization donates braille books, brochures with Covid-19 messages in Dowa

Campaign for Health Education Sanitation and Hygiene (CAHESH), a non-governmental organization which works with persons with disabilities, on Thursday handed over braille books and brochures with Covid-19 messages in Dowa.

Speaking after the handover ceremony, CAHESH Executive Director MacDonald Kaluwa, said the organization saw the inadequacy of Covid-19 information to people with disabilities especially those that are visually impaired.

“People that are visually impaired also need to get adequate information on the Covid- 19 issues,” Kaluwa said.

With assistance from United Purpose (UP) CEHESH pursued the idea and printed out the messages in braille language and the brochures which costed them K350, 000.

Chairperson for Malawi Union for the Blind (MUB) Dowa Chapter, Emmanuel Kapalamula described the donation as crucial which has come at the right time.

“These books will help us sieve the information and pick out only that which is true. However, I also urge other well-wishers to help us further especially when it comes to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),” Kapalamula said.

He urged well-wishers to help the visually impaired and other people with disabilities with hand sanitizers which he pointed out that due to the pandemic have become expensive.

Dowa has over 500 people who are visually impaired.
