Why women are posting black-and-white photos with the caption ‘challenge accepted’

Instagram has been overrun with women, famous and otherwise, posting black-and-white images of themselves with the caption, “Challenge accepted.”
There doesn’t seem to be much motivation for the photo challenge. That may be by design.
Celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Kristen Bell and Kerry Washington have accepted the “challenge,” which seems to involve posting a black-and-white image of oneself as a show of women’s empowerment. There’s no obvious social justice bent here other than to encourage women to share photos of themselves where they feel confident.
It works like this: Women nominate each other to post a monochrome image of themselves that they presumptively like. They share their photo, usually with the caption “Challenge accepted” and the hashtag #womensupportingwomen, and tag other women to post their own.
It’s reminiscent of the Dolly Parton challenge, which encouraged users to post four different images of themselves that they’d use as hypothetical headshots for different social media sites like LinkedIn and Tinder (a studious photo for LinkedIn; a sultrier shot for Tinder). That mostly functioned as a vehicle for users to post four flattering photos of themselves at once.
Ava Duvernay touched on that in her “challenge accepted” post. The “Selma” director shared a striking-black-and-white headshot and said she was “pretty sure this is just a cool excuse to post pix,” but she relented at her friends’ behest.
Other celebrities interpreted the challenge as a show of sisterly support. Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson shared a selfie and wrote “it is NOT a challenge to love my sisters but a gift and a bond that we have and we should cherish as long as we walk this earth.”
Critics of the challenge have called it an empty gesture that’s clogging up social media feeds during the dual crises of protests against racism and the Covid-19 pandemic. Those participating defend the photo challenge as a harmless way to support their friends and take a breath from those crises.
So others have tried to incorporate racial justice into their posts. After sharing an image of herself, Padma Lakshmi, host of “Top Chef” and Hulu’s “Taste the Nation,” included four images of Black women killed during or after interactions with police, including Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland, along with information on their stories and the statuses of the officers involved in their deaths.
Many more non-famous folks are posting their own “challenge accepted” photos, too — the phrase has been used over 4 million times on Instagram. But the hashtag creeps back up again every so often. Recently, international Instagram users were using the hashtag with pictures to show they were staying home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Former Taiwan president dies aged 97

Taiwan’s former president Lee Teng-hui, who earned the nickname “Mr Democracy” for the part he played in the island’s transition away from authoritarian rule, died Thursday aged 97, the hospital treating him said.
He was credited with paving the way for Taiwan to become a modern, free society after decades of one-party dictatorship and became a champion of the island’s bid to be treated as a sovereign state internationally.
Lee had been in hospital since February after choking on some food and had a history in recent years of chronic illnesses.

Man in custody for defiling nieces

A 41 year old man in Ntchisi District has been arrested for allegedly defiling and impregnating his two 16 year old nieces.
Both girls now have babies which they delivered after being defiled by the suspect a number of times, one in 2017 and the other in 2019.
Ntchisi Police Spokesperson, Richard Kaponda attributed the delay in arresting the suspect, Yosefe Chitedze from Gulumuleni Village in Chief Kalumo’s area to the fact that the suspect had been on the run.
It is also reported members of the community were afraid to report the suspect to police as he has been threatening he would kill them through magic.
According to District Coordinator for Youth net and Counselling (YONECO), Precious Mkukumira whose organization’s intervention has led to the arrest of the suspect, after they learnt about the incident, they decided to engage the police.
“Upon learning about the defilement incident which took place last year, we decided to follow up on the issue and engaged the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” said Mkukumira.
He added it was after the arrest that the community members disclosed about a similar offence the same suspect committed in 2017, but was never reported to police.
At the time of the arrest, the suspect was found with four charms locally known as zithumwa which the police wanted to destroy but he pleaded with them not to but rather take them to his home.According to Kaponda, the first victim was defiled twice in June 2017 while the second victim was defiled in August 2019 for three times on different days. Both of them were defiled in the suspect’s garden.
The victims did not share their experiences with anyone until months later when they were discovered to be pregnant by their respective mothers.
Ntchisi Police Community Policing Coordinator, Lloyd Maida said the district last year recorded 46 defilement cases and has so far recorded 35 defilement cases this year (from January to June). He admitted some cases are not reported at all.
“We have four police units in the district. Traditional authorities Chikho and Vuso Jere do not have police units, assuch, community members find it expensive to travel to the district police station to report cases,” said Maida.
He further said some victims’ parents and guardians opt to marry off the victims to the defilers rather than reporting to the police.
While bemoaning the increase in defilement cases and the conduct of some community members in the district for not reporting such cases to police, Ntchisi District Youth Officer, Gray Kalampa, called upon child protection structures in the district to be vigilant.
“We need to empower our communities to report to police whenever such offences are committed and this requires coordination between both government department

Man Sets Self On Fire After Getting Ditched By ‘Baby Mama’

In a sad development, a 28-year-old Zimbabwean man set himself on ablaze in Eastern Johannesburg,  South Africa. He couldn’t stand the sight of his ‘baby mama’ with other men. It is alleged that he doused himself first with petrol before setting himself on fire.
The publication has established that Tinashe Marimo, who hailed from Chitungwiza, allegedly committed the act in a fit of rage. He was hospitalized for a few days with severe third-degree burns. Unfortunately, he eventually succumbed to the injuries.
Sources close to the late Marimo, say that the now deceased once had a romantic relationship with a 38-year-old woman named Lizzie Ndlovu who is ten years his senior. However, after Lizzie broke up with him last year in December, he couldn’t cope with the reality of Lizzie moving on and being in another relationship.
“The two had an on-and-off relationship and seemingly the woman had more power financially. At first, they were so much in love and were inseparable. They actually had a child together but they would fight a lot. Lizzie finally called it quits in December and they were staying in separate places,” said a source close to the two.
The late Marimo was a qualified truck mechanic and a multi-talented musician, his genre was Zimdancehall. The source added that,
“Tinashe was a ‘hustler’ but things were not going well for him due to this Covid-19 pandemic. He had been trying to reconcile with Lizzie who had since moved on. He didn’t take this lightly possibly resulting in what he did.”
On the night in question, Murimo is alleged to have barged into his baby mama’s house already dripping of petrol and lit himself on fire. Neighbors rushed in with buckets full of water to try and extinguish the fire. He was rushed to the hospital with third-degree burns.
This is the first time the now deceased Murimo has tried to kill himself.  Another source said,
“Apparently this is not the first time Tinashe attempted to take his life. A few years ago he attempted to hang himself”
Murimo’s body was repatriated back to Zimbabwe on Wednesday. His relatives are deeply hurt by what happened, some even fainted, during body viewing. Marimo relatives suspect foul play as they can’t believe Marimo would set himself on fire.
