Man Utd make Dembele No1 transfer target if Sancho deal falls through with Coman and Costa also eyed as alternative

Ousmane Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017

The Borussia Dortmund star, 20, remains their top target, but the move is looking increasingly unlikely.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been forced to consider alternative options to Sancho.

According to ESPN, United have held informal talks over a move for Dembele.

Barcelona are allegedly open to offers for the 23-year-old following his underwhelming three-year spell in Spain.

He has not played a competitive match for the LaLiga side since November after undergoing surgery.

It is reported that United put forward the idea of a season-long loan with an obligation to buy.

Dembele, who has also been linked to Arsenal, remains under contract at the Nou Camp until 2023.

Another alternative option for United is Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman.

The Red Devils are reportedly eyeing up a loan move for the 24-year-old Frenchman.

And United could revive their interest in Juventus winger Costa to fill the void at Old Trafford.

He made just seven starts during the 2019/20 campaign after failing to impress Maurizio Sarri.

New boss Andrea Pirlo is now reportedly planning to get rid of him as part of a huge summer clear-out.

United were dealt a huge blow in their pursuit for Sancho as Dortmund chief Michael Zorc told them: "He'll play for us next season, that's final."

UK falls into recession for the first time in 11 years due to impact of the Coronavirus pandemic

UK has officially fallen into recession for the first time in 11 years due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Office for National Statistics said the UK gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have fallen by a record 20.4% in Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2020, marking the second consecutive quarterly decline after GDP fell by 2.2% in the previous quarter (Jan to Mar) 2020.

This plunged the UK into its first technical recession, defined as two straight quarters of economic decline since 2009.

Jonathan Athow, the deputy national statistician for economic statistics, said the economy bounced back in June after the monthly gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 8.7% following growth of 2.4% in May 2020, but it wasn’t enough to recover the lost output earlier in the year.

“The economy began to bounce back in June with shops reopening, factories beginning to ramp up production and housebuilding continuing to recover.

“Despite this, gross domestic product (GDP) in June still remains a sixth below its level in February, before the virus struck.”

The ONS said the collapse in output was driven by the closure of shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, and car repair shops.

The services sector, which powers four-fifths of the economy, suffered the biggest quarterly decline on record, the report said.

The construction sector was particularly badly hit, after building sites were shut down during the height of the lockdown.

Nankhumwa Faults Tonse Alliance On Gazzetted COVID-19 Measures

Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South has faulted government for the gazzetted new measures aimed at controlling the spread of Coronavirus in the country.

Among the measures, government has ordered mandatory wearing of face masks in public and banned public gatherings of groups of than 10 people.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Nankhumwa said the opposition is not in agreement with the new measures.

He said the opposition expected government to come up with short and medium term policy interventions to cushion people’s suffering before framing and gazzetting what he called the harsh and unrealistic Covid-19 measures.

“As opposition, we do not agree with the gazetted measures. Our expectation was that the Tonse Alliance government should have come up with short and medium term policy interventions to cushion people’s suffering before framing and gazetting the above harsh and unrealistic COVID-19 measures.

“We are all aware that prior to the fresh elections in June 2020, the previous DPP government attempted to impose a 21-day lockdown on the country as a measure to prevent the further spread of Coronavirus, which included travel restrictions across the country and a ban of public gatherings for groups of more than 100 people,” said Nankhumwa

He added: “The country erupted in arms against these measures, resulting in opposition-led mass demonstrations against the measures. Among the sticking points for the demonstrators that time was that Malawi is an informal economy with many people literally living from hand to mouth.
Those against lockdown argued that the government must first distribute money or other life essentials to the underprivileged and most vulnerable families in order to cushion against the effects of the lockdown and cover up for the lost time that people would spend staying in their homes as a result of the lockdown.

“It is our belief that the new measures are a clear demonstration of how hypocritical the new government is over the plight of Malawians. Based only on political expediency, President Chakwera vehemently opposed these similar measures his government is imposing on the people today.

“The new Tonse Alliance government has just imposed a partial lockdown, which is not substantially different from what the DPP imposed on the country in April this year, just five months ago. This time, there is mandatory wearing of face masks in public and a fine of MK10, 000 for not doing so. Church gatherings of more than 10 people have been banned and funerals should not gather more than 50 people with fines going up to MK100, 000 for non-compliance.”

Effort to talk to Minister of Information Gospel Kazako proved futile.
