MCP Youths Donates Face Masks To Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital

In a bid to contribute to the ongoing fight against COVID-19 Pandemic, Malawi Congress Party youths in Blantyre have donated face masks to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

The youths drawn from surrounding areas in Blantyre marched in Masauko Chipembere Highway raising the banner on the need to intensify collaborative efforts in the fight against the pandemic.

Zinenani Magola MCP’s youth campaign director in Limbe said their research revealed that some patients or guardians at the referral hospital do not have the capacity to afford surgical masks and even if some have cloth masks they need to wash them at a point in time and having an extra one will help them to avoid contracting the deadly virus.

“We are here in response to the call by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that we need to join hands in the fight against the pandemic. As youths this is our contribution in preventing further spread of the virus.

"We know some patients even guardians are in dire need of these masks in other words we want the hospital to give these masks for free to those who can’t afford so that no one is barred from accessing health services,” said Magola.

Administrator for health services at the hospital, Kondwani Chisi, said the donation has come at the right time because some patients and guardians literally come to the hospital with no mask.

“Some patients who seek our services here are not aware of the requirement to wear masks and others can’t afford to buy. This donation is significant in the sense that such kind of patients will be supported and we call upon people of goodwill to emulate this gesture,” said Chisi.

The youths said the donation is just a starter and will scale up their anti COVID-19 activities by reaching out to prisons and health centres across the country.

Currently Malawi has recorded 170 deaths, 3066 recoveries out of 5423 infections’ as of March this year.

Activist Ask Parliament to Pass Termination of Pregnancy Bill

Pro-abortion campaigners have courted Parliament asking legislators to table, debate and pass the Termination of Pregnancy Bill of 2014.

The abortion-discourse has for years remained a contentious issue owing it the country’s deep-rooted social and religious standing.

But in spite of dividing public opinion; advocates of abortion are closing-in on seeing the bill tabled in Parliament arguing; this is the only way to securing justice for women who acquire unplanned pregnancies.

Currently, statistics from Police, indicate, the country has seen a surge in pregnancies resulting from incest, defilement and rape, forcing gender rights campaigners like Emma Kaliya to justify their push for legalization of abortion in Malawi.

Said Kaliya: “The proposed bill by the Malawi Law Commission is clear about this issue; saying allow people who have been raped to abort, allow people who have gone into incest to abort; because you cant allow people to live with trauma.

So what we are saying is for new leadership and Parliament to go through recommendations of the Law Commission and consider the wisdom behind those recommendations.”

A sixteen-year-old girl from the border district of Mwanza (name with withheld) admits “its been traumatic to live with an-unplanned pregnancy and later having to give birth to a child whose father was imposed on her by her parents”.

Whilst a girl-rights campaigner — Girls Empowerment Network calls for psychological repair of traumatized girls; it throws its weight behind the tabling of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill for safety of girls and young women.

“Above all else this issue is about rights of vulnerable women seeking access to safer and dignified healthcare,” said Takondwa Kaliwo programs director for the network.

And Dr. Mathews Ngwale, chairperson of the parliamentary committee on health says his committee is ready to support the bill if presented in parliament.

A law scholar at Chancellor College Dr. Ngeyi Kanyongolo observes that while the issue come with emotions, the nation has to accept physical and psychological complications that come with unsafe abortion and unplanned pregnancies.

Dr. Kanyongolo said: “The abortion law in its current state is harsh and needs to be amended.

Think of children who are being sexually molested and ending up being pregnant, they arent only robbed off their childhood, but they experience labor complications because they arent mature for child bearing.”

The proposed Termination of Pregnancy Bill was drafted in 2014 after the ministry of health raised a red flag on the increase in cases of unsafe abortion in the country.

Zimbabwe makes it illegal for schools to expel pregnant girls

The republic of Zimbabwe has made it illegal now for schools to expel pregnant girls from across the country.

Education Minister, Cain Mathema issued the directive as a measure aimed at tackling gender inequality in the classroom and discouraging many girls from dropping out of school.

It was learnt that a legal amendment was announced last week and it seeks to reinforce a 1999 guideline that was patchily implemented.

The decision was reportedly made over fears of a rise in sexual abuse and unwanted pregnancies as schools have been closed since the Coronavirus pandemic struck.

Many parents of pregnant girls, or the girls themselves, decide to quit schooling due to the pregnancy, and schools do not always do enough to encourage them to stay, officials say.

“I’m expecting every parent and guardian and everyone else to understand that every child must be assisted by all of us to go to school,” Cain Mathema, the education minister in charge of schools, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation this week

“Every child whether boy or girl… has a right to go to school in Zimbabwe,” he said.

In 2018, 12.5% of the country’s roughly 57,500 school dropouts stopped attending classes due to pregnancy or marriage reasons – almost all of them girls, according to Education Ministry statistics.

Sibusisiwe Ndlovu, the communications specialist at Plan International Zimbabwe welcomed the new legislation as a step in the right direction.

“This amendment is crucial in fulfilling the access to education right for all children – especially girls,” Ndlovu said.

Man Utd Henderson Pens New 5-year-deal At Man Utd Henderson Pens New 5-year-deal

Dean Henderson has put pen-to-paper to sign a five-year contract at Manchester United with the option to have it further extended for another year.

The keeper in the past two seasons has been in between the sticks at Sheffield United, impressing under Chris Wilder and helping himself to be called up by Gareth Southgate to the England national team as the Three Lions prepare for the UEFA Nation’s League tournament next month.

Henderson was able to keep 13 clean sheets in the Premier League last season and he has been tipped by many to replace David De Gea as United’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. United manager, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has continued to throw his weight behind De Gea despite some uncharacteristic errors that cost the Red Devils valuable points last season, however, he is also a big fan of Henderson, hence, the reason the young custodian has penned a new contract at Old Trafford.

Chelsea have been showing interest in Henderson since watching him impress at Sheffield but United have quickly moved to persuade him to commit his future at the club up until 2025 at least.

The keeper himself is happy to have committed to United and he has expressed the delight. He said, “The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that.

“The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group. The faith that the Manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

“I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club. Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead.”

Solksjaer has recently conceded having a goalkeeper-choice issue at United with Henderson’s fantastic progress but it is one that he loves to have and he has praised the 23-year-old.

“We are delighted that Dean has signed his new contract,” Solskjaer said. “He had another great season at Sheffield United, where he gained a lot of experience and grew both as a player and a person. Dean is a fantastic young keeper with the attitude and work-rate to keep improving every day.”

“We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and that gives us the competition for places that we are looking for in the squad. Dean is another great example of the type of player who has come through the academy and truly understands what it means to be at Manchester United.

“We are all looking forward to working with Dean and continuing to develop his talent.”
